What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that addresses the diagnosis, prevention and correction of misaligned teeth and jaws. An orthodontist undergoes two to three years of additional training beyond dental school to specialize in managing tooth movement and guiding the development of the face and jaws.

When Should My Child Have Their First Orthodontic Appointment?

+

The American Association of Orthodontists® recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. By this age, many permanent teeth are in place, making it easier to identify and address any developmental issues. A screening at age 7 can determine if orthodontic treatment is needed and when it should begin.

Is There an Age Limit for Orthodontic Treatment?

+

Absolutely not! Orthodontic treatment is not just for children and teens; a growing number of adults are also improving their smiles and dental health through orthodontics. Treatment is possible as long as the teeth and gums are healthy.

What To Do If a Wire Is Poking Me?

+

If your orthodontic wire is poking your cheek, the best immediate solution is to apply a small piece of orthodontic wax over the protruding part of the wire to create a protective barrier (make sure to dry the area with a cotton gauze as thoroughly as possible before applying the wax). If you can’t reach the wire easily, gently try to bend it back towards your teeth with a clean pencil eraser, and then cover it with wax. Sometime people prefer placing a small piece of cotton on the wire temporarily to provide relief. If the issue persists or is causing significant pain, please contact our office.
